Marc Jacobs at New York fashion week

Madonna and Victoria Beckham’s favourite designer, Marc Jacobs, showed his spring/summer collection at New York fashion week last night. There was a softer, more feminine feel to this show compared to his autumn/winter collection. Instead of blocks of bright colour, boxy shapes and hairsprayed-to-hell hair, we saw a colour palette of pale pinks and muted blues.
Fabrics were gauzy, sheer and floating. The hemlines were long, the jackets were military, and the shapes were warped by neverending sculptural frills and ruffles. These adornments were festooned upon dresses and tops, then pared down and applied to tailored suits.
Big-name celebrities were in attendance, with Madonna perching on the front row

... which still featured ruffles, but in a more wearable way

Sheer, gauzy, feminine fabrics appeared throughout the collection. This dress in particular brought to mind a sea creature gently floating through underwater currents

OK, so we don’t think that gigantic pink harem bloomers will filter down to the average high street, but look closely and you’ll see an interesting twist on the flip flop, which we bet gets copied in all the shoe shops

The 80s was still a source of inspiration for Jacobs - note the bum bag on this outfit

Jackets had a 40s military feel, as if the models should have been carrying gas masks rather than handbags
